We café-hopped, observed you, dear citizens of Berlin, and tried to decide where exactly the fine line between stylish and not-so-stylish lies.
In our obsession to find the right outfit we often forget the importance of a good hairstyle. We know, we know... who wants to spend hours in the morning gelling, waxing and blow-drying when there are so much nicer things to do.... like reading the newspaper, having a steaming cup of coffee or just sleeping that little bit longer. But your hairstyle says so much more about you than you think. The “dress” that surrounds your face. The first feature by which people judge your sense of fashion.... and yes, we do live in a shallow world.
We remember when we were teens, we wore bell-bottoms, Eastpack backpacks, listened to Take That and our long, centre-parted tresses glowed in a ruby-carrot-reddish hue, thanks to cheap packs of henna at Müller. Cool then and even cooler today. Drop the bell-bottoms and the teen backpack, listen to some decent tunes, make sure your skin is beautifully creamy white and you may just as well be the next Florence and the Machine or Marcia Cross aka Bree from Desperate Housewives.
Whatever you do, always make sure your hairstyle matches your dress style... if you decide to carry off cute pixie hair a la Pixie Geldof - and girls this is important, because many years ago we made this mistake ourselves - make sure your hair is styled, you wear make-up (even if it's just a tad) and no tomboy outfits. Do listen to us, or you'll end up looking like a dike.
As we all know, grunge is the look this autumn/winter and believe it or not, it means the end of constant root-touch-ups for those of us who have decided to become part of the world of blondes. We love Kate Moss's sexy-out-of-bed-scruffy-root-showing long bob.
How often has mum told us: "Do not cut your hair short. It's too much work!" Not true... short can be uber sexy. No blow-drying and just that little bit of wax. Our idol, Agyness Deyn...
Be creative girls, be brave - have the sides short, carry the top in a massive quiff; put your pasta pot on your head and cut yourself a cute bowl bob... just go for it!
... and now to you boys... phew this one's going to be difficult.
We have to admit there have been arguments over this one. Many, many arguments! Some of us absolutely adore you with a fringe; others think it’s gay. If it’s your style…it can be very, very hot and we think you should give it a go. But please, please, PLEASE …. and we know that, as some of you are getting older, this is a frequently occurring problem….if you have a receding hairline do not try and cover it with a fringe! It’s not cool and we will see it and we will laugh! Carry that hairline with pride, tone it down with a nice short haircut or a messy hairstyle. Look at Jude Law – sexy!
Winter’s catwalks are going back to the classics… side partings, combed back, a bit of gel …. Preppy meets grungy. Yes boys, you are allowed to use gel again, but no wet look please! Ricky Martin and Peter Andre are still not cool.
For those of you who are lucky enough to have beautiful curls, don’t hesitate, show them off, we will not hold you back. The messier the better and no worries we’ll ruffle through them to keep them untidy.
We’re sure you’ll be shaking your heads in disbelief, but if you are blessed with a nice jaw line, can grow a decent stubble and have full hair … just look at Robert Pattinson and Orlando Bloom. Seriously boys, messy is good, messy is little work, messy is easy and messy is very attractive and if your hair’s long enough you can go for multiple hairstyles. Try the quiff for him and stand out!
We guess you got the message. Look after your hair, colour it, pamper it, go crazy. Don’t just let it hang and don’t be lazy. Get a new style every month, tell us about it, show us, we want to be inspired.
‘Till next week darlings.
LD xoxo
